Discover and experience a truly special day of the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua (with geysers, steam vents and mud pools) for your cruise ship shore excursion from Tauranga!
We pick you up within a short walk from your ship and board one of our modern small group minivan/bus vehicles, which being a small group allows us to move about more flexibly & efficiently; to enjoy more spontaneous encounters; simply not available to travellers on larger vehicles/tours.
This valley has many stories just waiting to be shared with you. One of the world’s most accessible geothermal site's within Whakarewarewa valley as well as the chance to experience Maori culture and history up close, we visit the kiwi bird encounter where you can see the elusive kiwi bird.
Whilst traveling through The lush Bay of Plenty we take you to a kiwi fruit orchard to learn and experience this wonder fruit with taste testing of different varieties!
Pick up time is flexible (dependent on your cruise ship arrival and departure time).
We start our journey at the Port of Tauranga, where we will meet you at the offical gates, then take you on a sightseeing drive around the beautiful area of Mount Maunganui where your ship has docked. Take in the sights of the bustling coffee shops, small designer boutique, white sandy beaches and not to forget the famous mount, which this area is named after. Leaving the coast we head into the countryside.
We make our way to Te Puia in Rotorua. The journey passed stunning lakes, deep forestry and the first hints of the geothermal area we are travelling too. Once we arrive at our destination, you will be guided around the attraction, where you will see large mud pools, steam vents, boiling bubbling pools & erupting geysers including the largest geyser in the southern hemisphere, Pohutu geyser which was recently ranked in the world’s top 5 geysers by Lonely Planet! We walk around a strange and unforgiving landscape & take you on a journey where history, culture and nature collide and where local Maori's showcase their vibrant Māori cultural performance through dance and song. A show that will leave you with deep lasting memories and not to be missed. Even the architecture at Te Puia has stories to tell, with Māori carvings, flax weaving and structures that have a deep cultural significance. You will also have the chance to visit the Kiwi bird enclosure to see this elusive native bird.
After leaving Te Puia we take drive through Rotorua visiting the geothermal public park, The lakefront with its many black swans, The tudor style museum with its Rose garden, & Rachel's spring before journing back towards the port of Tauranga and along the journey back we stop at a working Kiwifruit orchard.
Here we have the opportunity to visit the kiwifruit orchard, to learn how this wondrous fruit became established here in New Zealand. Surprisingly it's not a native plant but an interesting story explains all! You will have the chance to taste test different varieties & discover numerous products with kiwi fruit as part of the ingredients, along with learning a little knowledge about why this fruit thrives here!
After leaving the orchards we then return you back to you ship in plenty of time and wish you bon Voyage!
Our goal is to show you the major sights and take you where you’d like to go on your own, but don’t have the access or opportunity to plan yourself: Giving the opportunity for you the traveller to be free to savour the experience.
